Reflection: CCW exhibit

grace's picture

The CCW exhibit turned out so well! Although I had been walking by the mostly-finished exhibit over the last week or so, I hadn't fully stopped to look at all of the pieces and read through the corresponding wall text. While I had only met a couple of the artists through time in the makerspace and quick visits to CCW, it was really nice to meet or re-meet artists at the exhibit (and some family members). I think that it was particularly meaningful to see all of the accesibility features we had discussed in class incorporated in real life into the event space. In particular, have a quiet room, chairs, and fidget station seemed to make quite a difference and were very well-attended. For me, this really reinforced the importance of taking the time to think through accesibility needs (and to include many voices in this, as we all had different ideas about what might be helpful).

It was also exciting to see how all of the artwork had been arranged and to see pieces at I hadn't been able to really look at yet! I really enjoyed seeing the vest - I had seen some other clothing that had been made by Natasha instead, and found it really cool how some of the artists had multiple forms that they worked with. I think that at first, I was a little worried about the lack of time we had spent with the CCW artists for whom we were partnered with the choose artwork. Although the makerspace offered more opportunity to actually get to know artists, their lives, and work, the visits to CCW were much more limited. When choosing artwork, it felt really important to ensure that the pieces being chosen reflected what each artist was proud of and wanted displayed. I think that reactions to the pieces chosen were generally very positive, and I think it the future, it would have also been nice to ensure that we were building relationships with the specific artists whose work we were choosing throughout the semester, if possible.
