introduction

My name is Diane O'Fee-Powers and I teach in Philadelphia. Last year I taught 7th & 8th RELA. In the past I have taught science at this grade level. Next year I am scheduled to teach RELA until at least October. October is when the classes are leveled. If   more 7th graders are admitted to our school, we will need another teacher. That teacher will teach the 3 RELA classes and I will go back to teaching science & 1 of the RELA classes.

I am interested in inquiry based education  & how to implement it with the core curriculum. Most of us think of   inquiry in science class, but   don’t think of inquiry in the other subjects. I am interested in applying inquiry practices in both the science & the RELA class.

Science inquiry

Hi!

I'm Barbara Kauffman, a "sort of new" 4th Grade Classroom Teacher at Feltonville Intermediate School. Prior to teaching, I was a social worker. My co-worker, Tola Oronti, encouraged me to come to Bryn Mawr for this institute. We have co-taught science lessons together such as ones in the units of "Land & Water" and "Magnetism." I have a limited experience teaching science, however, I enjoy teaching many topics across the curriculum. Today's School District of Philadelphia students are bright and excitable and I want to keep up with their enthusiam when it comes to science inquiry. I think everyone has something to offer so we can all learn from one another!

Inquiry; Education, Life, and Me

Hello, my name is Luisana Taveras and I am an upcoming sophomore at Bryn Mawr College. This summer I am one of Professor Grobstein's interns for his Brain and Behavior Institute as well as an assistant for the remaining institutes (Computer Science Education and Science as Inquiry), critiquing the three to help get science, education, and science education less wrong. (Please help yourself to the surrounding forums found here.)

Introduction

My name is Deesha Lockett. I live in Willow Grove, PA. I am married and the mother of four children. I am a former teacher of Ivy Leaf School in Philadelphia where I taught first grade. In September I will be teaching Kindergarten at Covenant Academy. I want to use inquiry in my classroom to keep my students motivated and excited about learning in as many subject areas as possible. Inquiry will help to address the different learning styles that students bring to the classroom.

Susan's Introduction

Like other participants in the institute, I am an educator. I have enjoyed the teaching role all my life. I went to a K through 8 inner city public school in Phila and then to a large inner city high school, followed by matricultion at a large city college, Temple U. in Phila. I lived at home and spent my free time working to earn money at various jobs on and off campus. During all these years, from grade 4 on, I help other students in my classes. In college, I tutored and also volunteered as a reader for the blind. To put my husband through professional school, I worked as a technician in a research lab at UPENN. There, I developed a sence of myself as a capable scientist and teacher. When my hsband graduated, I began my graduate education. I

Comments and Experiences of K-12 Summer Institute

Coming into this institute, I had the impression that our weekly meetings were for discussing different approaches to education and how we can present this during the 2-week workshop. However, I was surprised to find that the workshop resembled very much like my 2nd semester course in Neurobiology and Behavior with Paul. I was very curious about how this lecture would relate to education since I had previously approached the course as solely a neurobiology class. I was astonished how approaching science as a “sum of observations” and a continuous loop related to education as well. At the same time I was wondering why I had not seen the connection earlier.
